On Wednesday, May 11, 2022, we collaborated with Los Angeles based, multidisciplinary artist Yeu Q Nguyen to host a one-day public art installation at Porto’s Bakery in Downey. The installation featured Yeu’s latest work, Weaving Hope, a large-scale tapestry made from up-cycled textiles that travels to different cities in LA County in its mission to gather over one thousand personal definitions of hope to uplift community resilience and connection through art.

In December 2021, the project was awarded the 2021-22 Fall Grant from Eastside Arts Initiative to bring its message of hope to Southeast LA (SELA) communities, with Stay Gallery serving as the project’s fiscal sponsor. The SELA chapter of Weaving Hope will culminate with a featured display of the tapestry as part of an art exhibition at Stay Gallery titled The Resilience Archive.

Throughout the day, close to 100 participants added their own personal definitions of hope to the tapestry on paper cut-out feathers. The first 50 participants that posted their feathers on social media or participated in a live video interview with Yeu received a free pastry bag, courtesy of Porto’s. We also received a surprise visit from Betty Porto, who added her own feather to the tapestry. It was wonderful seeing community members from across SELA participating in the pop-up and having the opportunity to hear personal stories, dreams and reflections from those who shared.

A big thank you to Eastside Arts Initiative and Porto’s Bakery for making this pop-up possible!
